That is not an error, and your calculator has not lost the number. It has just run out of room to show it.

What the “e” means

The built-in Calculator on iPhone shows at most nine digits in portrait. When a result is longer, it switches to scientific notation to fit: 1,738,658,088 becomes 1.738658e9, where “e9” means “multiply by 10 to the power of 9”. The value is still correct — but you can no longer read it off the screen, and you cannot see the last digits at all.

Those last digits are usually the ones that matter. An invoice total, an account number, a part number: the difference between right and wrong lives at the end of the number, and that is exactly the part scientific notation throws away.

The quick fix: turn your phone sideways

Rotating the iPhone into landscape opens the scientific calculator, and the display grows to about sixteen characters. For most everyday sums that is enough, and it costs nothing.

Two things to know before you rely on it:

Rotation lock has to be off, otherwise nothing happens.

Past sixteen characters the display falls back to scientific notation again — you have raised the ceiling, not removed it.

When that is still not enough

If you work with long numbers regularly — accounting, engineering, inventory — a calculator that quietly rewrites your result is the wrong tool. You end up copying the number into Notes to check it, which defeats the point of a calculator.

Calculator Free never switches to scientific notation. Long results stay written out in full, digit for digit, in both portrait and landscape, and the thousands separators stay on so you can read them at a glance. You can also copy the result straight out with the copy button, so the number reaches your spreadsheet exactly as calculated.

To be fair: if your sums fit comfortably in nine digits, the calculator already on your phone is a fine calculator, and this is not a problem you have. This post is for the people who have been squinting at an “e” for years and assumed there was nothing to be done about it.

Welcome!
